Fashion is a funny thing. It allows an age-old tradition to suddenly become trendy and hip. Such is the case for the recent craze that has colored the West in the form of mehndi, more popularly known as henna. It’s cool, it’s ethnic, it’s hip. The demand for Mehndi supplies and do-it-yourselfkits is coming from all corners of the globe, including the U.S., Canada and countries all over Europe. There is even a Henna Page Discussion Forum on the Internet, where curious minds can ask questions and share stories about the art.
Intrigued by the creation of beautiful designs on the body, henna is being used by women worldwide as a mode of self-expression. But tell a person from the Indian sub-continent that mehndi is hip and they will look at you with bewilderment, because the art has been a part of their culture for centuries. More than just attractive designs, the use of mehndi is intimately connected to the tradition and culture of India.
Actually, the first tracings of henna were found in North Africa, on the hands of Egyptian mummies, dating back to the year 5000 B.C. It was believed that applying henna to the hands and feet would ward off evil. In India, the use of henna has its beginnings in the northern part of the country, during the 12th century when it was introduced by the Mughal rulers.
Mehndi became most familiar when Rajasthani women started using it as a symbol of art and design. Similar to the tradition of ceremonial floor painting in Rajasthan, known as mandana, mehndi uses motifs from ancient history, including the folk tales and mythology of India. Numerous folk songs and proverbs also exist about mehndi.
As a symbol of prosperity and good fortune, mehndi continues to play a major role in modern Indian society, particularly during important occasions like weddings. Even today, a special day is allotted in an Indian marriage for the application of henna on the bride, as well as family members and friends. It is yet another example of how modern Indian society has carried on an ancient popular tradition. But mehndi is not exclusive to weddings, in fact, it is used on numerous occasions, like Holi, Diwali, Rakshabandhan, Teej and Nagpanchami.

The designs originate from the practices followed on these occasions and represent specific objects, dresses, floral designs, leaves, flowers and birds associated with the festival. Popular designs include the scorpion, a symbol of love and romance in Rajasthan, as well as the peacock, the lotus flower and the fish.

Mehndi has a special role during Karva Chauth, celebrated mostly in North India in the month of October. On this occasion, women take the day off, apply mehndi, dress in their wedding clothes and fast for the well-being of their husbands until they see the moon at night. Although the art is used primarily for decoration today, the use of mehndi is expressive of a distinct culture and bond that is created between women on such occasions. Different emotions and characteristics of their lives can be seen in the art work and the designs themselves reveal many sublime aspects of women’s culture.

No doubt, the henna craze in the West will die out in due course, just as all fads do. But in India, the art will remain a part of the cultural tradition that has thrived in the country for centuries.

The belief is that mehendi brings luck and beauty, and if about to be married a girl needs lots of either one or the other, but preferably both.
It is also believed that the darker the hue of the mehndi designs, the more favor the mother-in-law will bestow on the bride, which is even more necessary than luck and beauty! In fact, it is the duty of the future mother-in-law to engage the services of a mehendi artist. Traditionally, it is confined for the use of women but for really special weddings, the groom is also given a special mehndi henna design.
Traditional mehndi or henna designs are delicate and intricate, ranging from simple mehndi designs of balls to delicate flowers to messages and initials. There have even been some modern designs based on works by Picasso and van Gogh. There has also been some who favor the use of henna to tattoo wedding bands, bangles and anklets. It is pretty much anything goes with mehendi because it is non-permanent and always interesting.Of course as in any work of art, the application is the most important factor. The design is only as good as the artist who applies the henna. Mehendi is a temporary, painless tattoo that fades within a month, with no need for expensive laser treatments. It may be applied to the feet as well as other parts of the body, but it is most commonly used to enhance the loveliness of the hands of a woman.
Henna, or alternately heena is the pigment used for the process, is from the henna plant that resembles a tea plant. Legend has it that Cleopatra used henna to dye her hair, to make it more lustrous and beautiful. The leaves are gathered and dried and made into a fine powder, which is then mixed with tea, coffee, lime, water and eucalyptus oil to make a thick paste. It is usually applied with the use of a cone made of rolled plastic, much like a baker’s icing tube, and it is used much in the same way. The size of the hole will determine the fineness of the lines. For best results, a mehndi design must be allowed to dry at least overnight, with frequent applications of the lemon and honey until such time as it attains a glossy coat. This signals that the henna powder has been saturated with the mixture and is ready to be scraped off. Some heat-treat the mehendi or apply tiger balm to help the pigment darken. What will remain is the unique mehendi design hand makeup of porange-brown that will last a month but will be remembered for a lifetime. There are many women in Pakistan who are crazy about mehndi. Bangles on display in India

Bangles (aka churi or Choodi) are traditional ornaments worn mostly by South Asian women in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is a common tradition to see a new bride wearing glass bangles at her wedding and the honeymoon will end when the last bangle breaks. Bangles also have a very traditional value in Hinduism and it is considered inauspicious to be bare armed for a married woman.[1] Toddler to older woman could wear bangles based on the type of bangles. Bangles made of gold or silver are preferred for toddlers.

Some men wear a single bangle on the arm or wrist called kada or kara. In Sikhism, the father of a Sikh bride will give the groom a gold ring, a kara (steel or iron bangle), and a mohra.[2] Chooda is a kind of bangle that is worn by Punjabi women on her wedding day. It is a set of white and red bangles with stone work. According to tradition, a woman is not supposed to buy the bangles she will wear.

Hyderabad, Pakistan, is the world's largest producer of Bangles. While Moradabad is India's largest producer of bangles.History

Bangles—made from sea shell, copper, bronze, gold, agate, chalcedony etc.—have been excavated from multiple archaeological sites throughout India.[3] A figurine of a dancing girl—wearing bangles on her left arm— has been excavated from Mohenjo-daro (2600 BC).[4]

Other early examples of bangles in India include copper samples from the excavations at Mahurjhari—soon followed by the decorated bangles belonging to the Mauryan empire (322–185 BCE), and the gold bangle samples from the historic site of Taxila (6th century BCE).[3] Decorated shell bangles have also been excavated from multiple Mauryan sites.[3] Other features included copper rivets and gold-leaf inlay in some cases.[3]
Design

Bangles are circular in shape, and, unlike bracelets, are not flexible. The word is derived from Hindi bungri (glass).[5] They are made of numerous precious as well as non-precious materials such as gold, silver, platinum, glass, wood, ferrous metals, plastic, etc. Bangles made from sea shell, which are white colour, are worn by married Bengali and Oriya Hindu women. A Special type of Bangle are worn by women and girls, especially in Bengal area commonly known as "Bengali Bangle", which is used as a substitute of costly Gold bangle, and is produced by fixing a thin Gold strip (weight varies between 1 to 3 gms.) is thermo-mechanically fused onto a bronze bangle, followed by manual crafting on that fused Gold strip.

Bangles are part of traditional Indian jewellery. They are usually worn in pairs by women, one or more on each arm. Most Indian women prefer wearing either gold or glass bangles or combination of both. Inexpensive bangles made from plastic are slowly replacing those made by glass, but the ones made of glass are still preferred at traditional occasions such as marriages and on festivals.

The designs range from simple to intricate handmade designs, often studded with precious and semi-precious stones such as diamonds, gems and pearls. Sets of expensive bangles made of gold and silver make a jingling sound. The imitation jewellery, tends to make a tinny sound when jingled.
Types of bangles

There are two basic types of bangles: a solid cylinder type; and a split, cylindrical spring opening/closing type. Primary distinguishing factor for these is the material that is used to make the bangles. This may vary anything from glass to jade to metal to lac and even rubber or plastic.

One factor that adds to the price of the bangles is the artifacts or the work done further on the metal. This includes embroidery or small glass pieces or paintings or even small hangings that are attached to the bangles. The rareness of a color and its unique value also increase the value. Bangles made from lac are one of the oldest ones and among the brittle category too. Lac is clay like material which is molded in hot kilns-like places to make these bangles. Among the recent entrants are the rubber bangles that are worn more like a wrist band by youngsters while the plastic ones are there to add the trendy look.

Normally, a bangle worn by people around the world is simply an inflexible piece of jewelry worn around the wrist. However, in many cultures, especially in the South Asia and in Arabian Peninsula, bangles have evolved into various types in which different ones are used at different occasions.[6
